Description:
The sensorimotor system plays an important role in joint position sense, perception of force, and coordination in order to allow our hands to manipulate objects. This system is impacted by injuries to the hand and the wrist, necessitating hand therapists’ understanding of this system and its function. This presentation will define and describe the sensorimotor system in relation to hand therapy and will cover the evidence on sensorimotor interventions and assessments. The webinar incorporates the available research, but emphasizes the clinical application.

Learning Objectives:
At the end of the presentation, participants will be able to:

1. Describe the sensorimotor system and its relationship to hand and wrist function
2. Identify common hand injuries that should be suspected to have sensorimotor involvement based on evidence
3. Discuss the evidence on sensorimotor interventions and list a variety of options for creative and client-centered sensorimotor interventions
4. Perform as least one clinically relevant sensorimotor assessment for clients with hand injuries
5. Apply information in the presentation to work in the hand therapy clinic
